American composer John Harbison writes well for large ensembles and small ones, from the Opera stage (His Great Gatsby was commissioned by The Metropolitan Opera for a cast including Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Susan Graham and Dawn Upshaw) to solo miniatures such as Robert Gupta included in our album Suryodaya. John wrote Four Songs of Solitude as a gift for his wife Rose Mary, who gave the premiere of these pieces in 1985.
