The Austrian and then American composer Arnold Schoenberg sometimes shares the “most important 20th Century composer” mantle with Igor Stravinsky. After writing his most enduringly popular (and still tonal) Verklärte Nacht in 1899, Schoenberg’s twelve-tone compositions paved the way for many compositional giants who followed him. Yarlung’s first Arnold Schoenberg pieces are the charming violin duets Martin Chalifour and Maia Jasper play on our album Martin Chalifour in Walt Disney Concert Hall. Schoenberg wrote these works as a violin student in about 1880, and ours is the world-premiere recording. The composer wrote these pieces when he was about six years old. The composer was about six years old at the time.
