Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho came to our attention first through her many successful premieres with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Yarlung’s first connection with Saariaho came from our recording of Sept Papillons for solo cello on Elinor Frey’s debut album Dialoghi. Later, Yarlung’s Petteri Iivonen became one of Saariaho’s favorite interpreters of her violin concerto (which we heard in Los Angeles with American violinist Jenny Koh).
