Badal Roy, known to the jazz world as the titan who played tabla with Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman on some of their most intriguing and successful albums, created Calcutta Sunrise for us on the opening track of Suryodaya. Badal Roy was born in what is now Pakistan, and moved to the United States in 1968, where he served tables at a restaurant in New York. Fortunately for music history, Badal began to play in the restaurant as well, and was soon invited to record with Miles Davis. Badal Roy joins his cousin Robert Vijay Gupta on Robert’s debut album, Suryodaya.
